Description
Salaam Bombay (1988) is a critically acclaimed realistic film by Mira Nair which has Nana Patekar in the lead role. The film features the plight of street children in Bombay and the adversities they face. The film has been nominated for many prestigious awards and won the 1988 National Film Award For Best Feature Film In Hindi and the Caméra d’Or at Cannes. Most of the child actors who played their parts in Salaam Bombay were actually children living in the streets.
In this Mira Nair film, Krishna (Shafiq Syed) is kicked out of his home by his mother when he damages his brother’s bike. His mother tells him to come back when he can earn Rs 500. He joins a nearby circus, only to be abandoned later. With little money, he manages to get a ticket to the nearest station in Bombay, where he is looted by a gang of hooligans whom he befriends later. He ends up in a small downtrodden community and gets a job delivering tea earning him the name Chaipau. Chillum (Raghubir Yadav), a young man and a drug addict working for the local drug dealer, Baba (played by Nana Patekar), takes Krishna under his wing. Krishna’s motive is to earn Rs 500 but he has his eyes on a girl called ‘Sola Saal'(Sweet Sixteen), forced into prostitution with whom he tries to escape. In steady pursuit of his 500 rupees, find out how life unfolds for Krishna.
The surly Baba fires Chillum and Krishna struggles for a meal. Also, he has to take care of Chillum who cannot live without drugs and thereby robs an elderly Parsi man to get more money.
Salaam Bombay was released by Eagle Home Entertainment in DVD format with a U/A rating. It is in Hindi with English subtitles and has a runtime of 109 minutes.
